A discussion meeting on the occasion of International Migrants Day-2013 jointly was organised
by District Administration and District Employment and Manpower office held at local
Shilpakala Academy here on Wednesday.
Deputy Commissioner of Narsingdi Obaidul Azam attended meeting as chief guest with
Additional Deputy Commissioner (general) Suriaya Begum in the chair.
Taimur Gofran, Assistant Director of District Employment and Manpower officer delivered the
welcome speech. He said currently 8.5 million people are working in about 157 countries across
the world. Now every year about six lakh Bangladeshis are migrating to different countries for
job.
The Deputy Commissioner (DC) said Bangladeshi migrant workers are playing an important role
in the country’s economic development. He said the present government has sent 2.4 million
workers in 157 countries in last five years and the country received a total of US Dollar 58.39
billion remittance during the period.
The discussion was addressed, among others, by BRAC representative Abdul Majid, BSS
Narsingdi correspondent Muhammad Abu Taher, Sonali Bank Manager Saif uddin Sobuj, Islami
Bank Manager Firaj uddin, Al-Arafah Islami Bank Manager Noor Mohammad Borhan uddin
Khan.
Speakers narrated their experiences that many Bangladeshi migrants workers employed
overseas fall victim to exploitation by recruitment agencies or their foreign employers due to
lack of their knowledge about the migration process as well as labour laws and right.
Earlier, a largely participation procession was brought out from Deputy Commissioner office
premises which was paraded in the main streets of the town. -BSS, Narsingdi
