Int’l. confce. on sustainable Dev. in mountain regions

The I International Conference on Research for Sustainable Development in Mountain Regions is a scientific event for sharing and discussing methods, tools, results, applications, trends and challenges in research in mountain systems. The international event aims to promote sustainable development in mountains, based on science, knowledge, and innovation. The conference is part of the larger Mountain 2016 international event, and will be preceded by the X European Mountain Convention slated for 3-5 October 2016.

The conference is being organized for the first time in Bragança, Portugal under the theme “Ecosystem services and sustainable development”. The conference will address the actual state of mountain science and how its latest conceptual and practical developments can support sustainable development. Ecosystem services, given the relevance of the approach and applications, will play a central role in the conference. The conference expects to produce formal declarations concerning the state of knowledge on mountains from a problem-solving perspective at several geographic scales, including the community of Portuguese-speaking countries. The conference will also be a stage for the formal establishment of research networks that are currently under development.

By bringing together the European mountain community and a broader international community of scientists and stakeholders, Mountains 2016 will create a unique opportunity for individuals and institutions to share experiences and to establish information and collaboration networks. By jointly addressing climate change adaptation and ecosystem services in mountain regions, it will provide an exceptional occasion to present important contributions to science and sustainable development in the mountains of Europe and the rest of the world.
