IS claims responsibility for bomb attack on Dhaka police

Dhaka, Sept 1 – Middle-East-based militant outfit Islamic State or IS yesterday claimed responsibility for the bomb attack on police in Science Laboratory intersection.
In a twitter message of the ‘Site Intel Group’, it wrote on Sunday: “IS Claims credit for the bomb blast on police in Bangladeshi capital”.Meanwhile, Police yesterday filed a case over the crude bomb attack on policemen.
Sub Inspector Johirul Islam filed the case with New Market police station under the explosives act, said Atikul Islam, Officer in Charge (OC) New Market Police station.
Two policemen, including a security detail of LGRD Minister Tazul Islam, were injured when a bomb went off at Science Lab intersection on Wednesday.
The crude bomb was thrown from the footbridge at the intersection around 9:20 pm, said police and eyewitnesses.
SITE Intelligence had previously reported IS’s claim of responsibility of the 2016 terrorist attack on Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan.
However, Authority concerned in Bangladesh, have refused the claim of IS. The Police Headquarters believe the attack was perpetrated by domestic terrorists without any ties to IS.
Nevertheless, the authorities will investigate the incident, said Assistant Inspector General (Media) of Police Sohel Rana, adding that a similar type of handmade bomb was used in a previous attack on the police.
All units of the police have been put on alert as the blast is believed to have targeted the law enforcers, he added.
In the meantime Criminal Investigation department (CID) and Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) have collected the evidence from the place of incident.
On May 26, two people, including a female police officer, were injured after a bomb went off near a police pickup in the capital’s Malibagh intersection.
On April 29, two traffic police constables and a community traffic policeman were injured in a blast in Gulistan.
Hours after the explosions, SITE Intelligence Group, an American company that tracks online activity of white supremacist and jihadist organisations, said the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks. – UNB
