Japan firm keen to open stem cell centre

A Japanese research company is interested to open a stem cell processing centre in Bangladesh. The Seems Inc gave the proposal when State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Mozibur Rahman Fakir visited their centre in Tokyo on Tuesday.
According to a media release, the junior minister interacted with the researchers there to find out how “the technology can be brought to Bangladesh”.
Stem cells are versatile cells with an ability to multiply and develop into many other kinds of cells.
A stem cell is transplanted to replace bone marrow that has been destroyed by disease, chemo, or radiation.
The stem cells in the bone marrow do not work the way they should in some diseases like leukaemia, aplastic anemia, certain inherited blood diseases, and some diseases of the immune system.
The proposal came when Bangladesh was also working to open a first-of-its-kind bone marrow transplant centre at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
Health Minister AFM Ruhal Haque last year said they would be able to open the centre by June this year.
