Journalist, columnist Syed Abul Maksud dies

Dhaka, Feb 23 — Journalist and noted columnist Syed Abul Maksud died in the capital on Tuesday evening. He was 74. He was pronounced dead after being taken to the Squire Hospital around 7:15 pm, Brac’s Head of Migration Programme Shariful Hasan said.
The journalist was rushed to the hospital after he had suddenly fallen sick. He was suffering from breathing complications in the evening, he said.
Abul Maksud left behind his family members and a host of relatives to mourn his death.
The journalist, known for his critical and research works, was born on Oct 23, 1946. He was a regular contributor to the Daily Prothom Alo.
His essays on literature, society, culture and politics were much appreciated by the readers for his clear view, lucid language and simple style.
His Journal of Germany is a popular travel book.
In 1995, he was given Bangla Academy Literary Award for his contributions to Bengali Literature. – UNB
