Journos vow movement for Sagar-Runi murder trial

Dhaka – Leaders of journalists unions and the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity have decided to launch fresh movement to press their demand for arrest of the killers of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Nahar Runi to bring them to justice.They were speaking at a protest event on Saturday at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity marking five years of the murder.
Speakers at the protest rally criticised Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan for his recent comment that he knew nothing about the progress of the murder investigation.
They warned, if the investigating agency cannot submit its report before the court at the next hearing, a people’s investigation commission would be formed to unveil the mystery behind the killing. They urged journalists to stand united to press home the demand.
Sagor-Runi’s son Mahir Sarowar Megh was present at the rally. BFUJ Secretary General Omar Faruk alleged that law enforcement agencies had done nothing in the five years since the murder.
BFUJ leader and former National Press Club president Shawkat Mahmud, former BFUJ Secretary General Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan, DRU President Shakhawat Hossain Badsha, DRU Vice President Azmal Huq Helal, CRAB General Secretary Sarwar Alam spoke at the rally among others. Maasranga Television News Editor Sagar Sarowar and ATN Bangla Senior Reporter Meherun Runi were killed in their residence in February 2012.
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police started the investigation; later the case was shifted to the Detective Branch. On April 18 that year, the High Court transferred the case to Rapid Action Battalion, after DB expressed inability to solve the case. So far, the court has extended the deadline for submitting the investigation report 47 times – the latest was on last Wednesday. – News Desk
