K’ganj Bank burglary: 2 held with looted Tk 16.19cr in city

Dhaka – Two people, including the prime suspect in the Kishoreganj Sonali Bank burglary case, were arrested along with looted Tk 16.19

crore from Shyampur Balurmath area in the capital on Tuesday.
A team of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested the main suspect, Habibur Rahman, and his associate known as Idrish Ali along the looted
money stuffed in five sacks from the area at noon.
Rab headquarters sources said Habib had long been living at a rented house at Rathkhola in the district town of Kishoreganj where the
looted bank branch is situated using the name Sohel.
After the bank robbery, he brought the looted money to Dhaka in five sacks along with 230 sacks of rice by a truck and hired a house at
Shyampur, the sources said.
During preliminary interrogation, Habib said he took the five sacks of money and eight ones of rice to his rented house at Shyampur and sent
the remaining sacks of rice to Atrashi Dargah Sharif in Faridpur.
He also described the daring bank robbery happened in a filmy style. During a briefing at the Rab headquarters on Tuesday, director general
of the elite force Mukhlesur Rahman said they started investigation into the bank robbery soon after it came to light.
The elite force could be able to arrest two culprits, including the prime suspect, using modern technology, he said, hoping to arrest the
other perpetrators soon.
Burglars from the rented house of Habib tunneled their 30-foot way into the vault of Sonali Bank’s main branch at Rathkhola and looted
about Tk 16.40 crore Habib had long been living in the house. He used to go out of the
house on the pretext of visiting his ailing parents. He has not been seen in the house since Saturday.
DGM Sheikh Amanullah of the bank filed a case against some unidentified people on Sunday night
Meanwhile, over 20 people, including manager of the branch Humayan Kabir Bhuiyan and its 11 officials, detained for interrogation in
connection with the robbery were still under police custody. – UNB
