Khaleda given dental treatment at BSMMU Hospital

Dhaka, Jun 12 (UNB) – Imprisoned BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Saturday underwent treatment at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) to remove fungal infection from her tongue.

The BNP chief, who has been undergoing treatment at the BSMMU since April 1 last, was taken to the hospital’s A block from its Cabin block’s 621-No room at noon for the treatment around 1:20pm amid tight security.

Prof Shamsul Alam of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department treated Khaleda.

She was taken back to the cabin block after the treatment, BSMMU director Brig Gen Dr AK Mahbubul Hoque told reporters at a press briefing.

“Khaleda Zia was feeling uncomfortable due to irritation in two teeth in her upper gum which also caused small-scale fungal infection in her tongue. Her problem was removed with the hour-long treatment at the dental department,” he said.

Asked about Khaleda’s health, the BSMMU director said her condition is gradually improving with the continued treatment under a medical board. “It’s difficult to completely cure her some chronic disease like arthritis and diabetic. I say she is now fine. Her condition is definitely better than when she came here (BSMMU).”

Prof Shamsul Alam said examining the BNP chief’s dental health he found two teeth in her upper gum broken with sharpness. “We’ve reduced the sharpness of the teeth through grinding.”

He said the condition of her other teeth is good. “I think the fungal infection from her tongue will go now. Madam also told us she’s not facing any problem after the teeth grinding.”

Alam said they gave Khaleda mouthwash for gurgle.

The BNP chief was given the dental treatment a day after her party voiced deep concern over her illness, and demanded her proper treatment either at home or abroad as per her desire.

On June 12 last, the BNP chairperson received treatment at the same treatment for the same problem.

On February 8 last year, Khaleda was sent to jail as she was convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

Later, she was convicted in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case. On April 1, Khaleda was shifted to BSMMU from Old Dhaka Central Jail with severe pain in the joints of her hands and legs, insomnia, weakness and high sugar level.
