A lighterage vessel sank in the channel leading to the Chittagong port on Thursday after it was hit by an oil-tanker.
Lighetrage vessels are meant to transport cargo or personnel from bigger ships to the shore.
The vessel carrying wheat was anchored at the Sylo jetty when it was hit by tanker moving out of the port around 9.45am.
However, traffic at the port was unaffected, said Chittagong Port Authority’s secretary Syed Farhad Uddin.
“The lighterage vessel was carrying between 1,500 and 2,000 tonnes of wheat,” said the port official.
Witnesses said oil-tanker ‘Golden Blessing’ hit the lighterage vessel ‘Blue Pacific’, which was anchored at the Sylo jetty around 9.45am.
The oil-tanker was sailing-off from the TSP jetty. – Agency
