Mad rush of city life makes people care little for virus

Over the past week, life in the capital assuredly returned to normal – not some new one, as some had predicted in the shadow of the Coronavirus pandemic. The same old one, maybe wearing a mask.

Bangladesh’s confirmed coronavirus cases soared to 84,379  – surpassing China’s caseload on Saturday – with the detection of 2,856 new cases.

The country’s death toll meanwhile rose to 1,139, surpassing that from the Rana Plaza tragedy, with 44 casualties reported the same day, by the Directorate General of Health Services.

The city roads that lay empty for weeks on end through April and May, recently filled again with the familiar chaos of an unplanned megacity providing for 16 million residents, as the ‘lockdown’ was partially and then fully withdrawn by the government.
