A 45-year old man who took admission to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) with coronavirus symptoms after fleeing from a hospital in Dhaka died here early Thursday afternoon.The man took admission to the KMCH with symptoms of fever, cough and shortness of breath. His family concealed that he was earlier admitted to a hospital in Dhaka.
Doctors at the hospital said that the man, Mostahidur Rahman of Helatala in Khulna city, might have died of coronavirus as he had symptoms of coronavirus infection such as fever and breathing problems.
Hospital director Dr ATM Manzur Morshed said a total of 20 doctors, nurses and medical staff who came to Mostahidur’s contact were sent to home quarantine.
KMCH corona unit doctor Shailendranath Biswas said the man who underwent thyroid operation at a private hospital in Dhaka 10 days ago was admitted to the hospital’s surgery unit for his post-operative treatment at about 2:30am on Thursday.
In the morning, his relatives called physicians and medical staff as he was suffering from high fever and breathing problem. Later, doctors visited him, he said.
He said at first physicians thought that the problems might occur due to his operation.
As time elapsed after giving him needed treatment and he was not feeling better, physicians asked about his past medical records or whether he came to contact with any returned expatriate, he said.
He said that the relatives then said that he, after his operation, was kept at the Intensive Care Unit of the Dhaka hospital where another coronavirus positive patient was admitted and died.
But it was too late and he died at about 1:30pm on Thursday, he said.
The physician also said that, during discharge, the Dhaka hospital advised Mostahidur to remain in home quarantine but he neither follow it nor gave the true information to the KMCH.
Had the patient or his relatives not concealed the information, the hospital could admit the patient to the corona unit, Shailendranath said.
He said that they suspected that Mustahidur was a coronavirus positive patient and sent his blood sample to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research in Dhaka for confirmation whether their suspicion was true.
KMCH director DR ATM Manzur Morshed told reporters that all the 18-20 doctors, nurses and medical staff of the hospital who came to his contact were sent in home quarantine.
The death of the patient created widespread panic among doctors, nurses and paramedics at the KMCH., reports internet.
