Mariner Youngs new Premier Hockey champions

Dhaka  – Coming from behind, Dhaka Mariner Youngs Club beat four times champions Usha Krira Chakra by 3-2 goals in the last
league match of the Green Delta Premier Division Hockey League at the Moulana Bhasani National Stadium here on Friday to emerge as the new champions of the league.With the day’s feat, Arambagh outfit Dhaka Mariner Youngs Club smartly clinched the maiden league crown securing 43 points from all the 16 league encounters while former champions and old Dhaka outfit Usha KC finished runners-up for the 2nd time with 38 points from 16 matches.Abahani Limited finished 3rd securing 36 points while Mohammedan SC bagged 35 points to place 4th in the 12-team league.The winners were trailing by 1-2 goals in the first half.National forward Hasan Jubair Niloy put Usha KC ahead in the 13th minute by a field goal (1-0) while another national forward Pushkar Khisa Mimo doubled the Usha KC margin, also by a field goal just two
minutes later (2-0).Waqas Sharif reduced the Mariner Youngs margin in the 26th minute by a field foal (2-1) goal while Arshad Hossain leveled the margin for Mariner Youngs in the 50th minute by another field goal (2-2).Ishtiaq Ahmed scored the dream match-winner for Mariner Youngs Club in the 59th minute, also by a field goal (3-2).Soon after the match, President of Arambagh KS and local ward commissioner AKM Mominul Haque Sayeed announced a cash award of US $ 10,000 for the new champions Dhaka Mariner Youngs Club team.After the match, champions Mariner Youngs captain Mamunur Rahman Chayan expressed his total satisfaction over the match. “We played according to the advice and strategy of our coach (Gerhard Peter Rach) and we came out successful playing the game in cool temper.”The match remained stopped for about 10 minutes as Mariner supporters violently protested an umpire decision against their club in the first half.
