Media role to protect rights of sex minority urged

Deputy Speaker Advocate Fazle Rabbi Mia yesterday said that media can play major role to protect the rights of sex minority people.
“Sexual minority people in Bangladesh are passing through a vulnerable life. Media people can create awareness, so that government could take necessary steps to protect their rights and injustice,” he said while addressing at Bandhu Media Fellowship Award giving ceremony in the city as the chief guest.
The program was organised by Bandhu Social Welfare Society (BSWS).  The Deputy Speaker said the Ministry of Social Welfare can place a bill, so that they can take positive action in connection to give the constitutional recognition to the sexual minority people by approving the bill in parliament. Former minister Advocate Abdul Matin Khashru, MP, said that there is no doubt that the report made by the journalist will have impact on the mass people.
“Government, media and other stakeholders should work more effectively for upholding the rights of the sexual minority people,” he added.
“Bandhu Social Welfare Society has sponsored the fellowship programe, titled, Bandhu Media Fellowship 2014. A total of 10 journalists have been awarded the fellowship. They are : Karamot Ullah Biplob, Special Correspondent, ATN Bangla, Akhil Kumer Podder, Special Correspondent, Ekushey Television, Gazi Salahuddin Mahmud Meem, Special Correspondent, SATV, Atika Rahman, Staff Reporter, RTV, Shahnaz Sharmeen, Senior Reporter and News Presenter, ABC  Radio, M Mamun Hossan, Senior Reporter of Daily Jaijaidin, Delowar Jahan, Staff Reporter, Dainik Shakaler Khobor, Barek Kaiser, Staff Reporter, Dainik Ittefaq, Shariful Islam Palash, Special Correspondent, Amader Shomoy.com  and Faisal Abdullah, Senior Sub-Edtior, Bangla Tribune.com. They were awarded crest and honorarium and certificates. Leo Kenny, Country Director of  UNAIDS, Nawazish Ali Khan, Advisor-Program of ATN Bangla were also addressed among others as Special Guest.
The award giving program was presided over by Ms. Tamanna Rahman, Executive Member, Bandhu Social Welfare Society (BSWS) while Shale Ahmed, Executive Director of the organisation presented on the objective and process of media fellowship award.
