Meeting on non communicable diseases Wednesday

Dhaka – The global epidemic of non-communicable diseases (NCDs*) is now widely acknowledged as a major development challenge in the 21st century and a significant threat to achieving internationally agreed development goals. NCDs are the leading causes of death worldwide. Almost two-thirds of all global deaths are due to NCDs. Increasingly, it is low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and the poorest and most vulnerable populations that are hardest hit by these largely preventable diseases. In addition to being the leading causes of death, NCDs often impose years of disability on those affected and their families. The onset of many NCDs can be prevented or delayed by addressing their common risk factors: tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet, and insufficient levels of physical activity. The Non Communicable Disease forum (NCDF) and Eminence Associates for Social Development are jointly going to organize a meeting on the scopes of forming a intra parliamentary forum for Non Communicable Diseases in Bangladesh and its opportunity in establishing and strengthening NCD related policies and activities locally as well as regionally and globally. The meeting is planned to be held on Wednesday at the MP Hostel from 11.00am to 2.00pm.
The meeting will serve as a stakeholder gathering of member of parliamentary, doctors ,professor , researchers, officials, and influential media to discuss on the situation of Non Communicable Disease(including- cancer, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, stroke.), the scopes of the members of the parliament to form a common platform such as a forum to contribute through evidence based policy and advocacy strategies formation and implementation, opportunities of contributing significantly in the prevention and management of Non Communicable Diseases locally, regionally and globally
The meeting will be presided by Dr. Rashid E Mahbub, Chairman, Non-Communicable Diseases Forum. Prof. Dr.A.F.M. Ruhal Haq,(Honorable Member of Parliament and Member of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Science and Technology, Member of Public Accounts Committee of Health & Family Welfare) will adorn the chair of special guest while Dr. Habibe Millat, (Honorable Member of Parliament), will act as the chief guest of the meeting. Dr. Shamim Hayder Talukder, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Eminence will give a presentation on the importance and scopes of forming a parliamentary forum on NCDs and its future activities roadmap. – Press release
