Canadian national Michael Foley has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of country’s leading mobile phone operator Grameenphone.
Grameenphone in a statement today made the announcement of his appointment by its board of directors which would be effective from May 26.
The 56-year old Foley who served as CEO of Telenor Bulgaria most recently will succeed Petter-B Furberg, who has been serving as interim CEO since October 2016.
Now, Furberg will remain with Grameenphone in the capacity of Chairman of its board of directors.
Besides, the Grameenphone board has also appointed Yasir Azman as the Deputy CEO who has been performing as Chief Marketing Officer (CMO).
The 42-year old Azman will remain as CMO while taking on extended responsibilities for the digital and commercial strategy within GP and Telenor’s Emerging Asia Cluster.
The announcements were made following the decision of 177th Board Meeting held on Sunday.
“Grameenphone is on a strong trajectory and it will be Michael’s job to ensure continuity to the current direction together with all the employees in Bangladesh,” said Sigve Brekke, President and CEO of Telenor Group, the parent company of Grameenphone.
Foley, a graduate of McGill University in Montreal with BA in Organizational Psychology, has been with Telenor Group since 2014.
Prior to be CEO of Telenor Bulgaria, he served as CEO of Telenor Pakistan. He has more than 30 years of sales, marketing and operational experience in the telecom, retail and gaming sectors from both advanced and growth markets.
Expressing his reaction, Foley said: “I am honored and excited to become part of Grameenphone at a time when connectivity and digitization is transforming Bangladesh, and I hope to further strengthen GP’s position as a leader in digital services.”
On the other hand, Furberg will also continue as Head of Telenor Group’s Emerging Markets Cluster in Asia and remain on the Group’s Executive Management Team.
The Emerging Markets Cluster in Asia comprises Telenor Group’s operations in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Myanmar.
Christopher Laska will step down as Chairman of the Grameenphone Board of Directors and continue in his role as Senior Vice President for Board Governance and Partnership Relations in Asia.
The announced changes would be effective on May 26, 2017, reports BSS.
