‘Mobile phone subscribers in BD rose by 8om in 8yrs’

Dhaka, Jun 8 – The country’s mobile phone subscribers rose by nearly 8 crore in the last eight years since 2009 as per statistics placed by State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Tarana Halim in Parliament on Thursday.The number of mobile phone subscribes increased to 13.30 crore as of April 2017 from 5.40 crore in 2009.
Tarana placed the statistics while replying to a tabled starred question from Awami league MP Nazrul Islam Babu (Narayanganj-2).
The number of mobile phone subscribers was some 6.90 crore in 2010, 8.50 crore in 2011, 9.51 crore in 2012, 11.31 crore in 2013, 12 crore in 2014, 13.80 crore in 2015 and 12.60 crore in 2016.
In reply to an unstarred (written) question from the ruling party MP Ali Azam (Bhola-2), the junior minister said the active subscribers of Grameenphone (GP) was some 6.04 crore in April 2017, while that of Robi-Airtel is 3.75 crore, Banglalink 3.13 crore and Teletalk 38.30 lakh.
Some 3.55 crore subscribers use 3G network of the four mobile phone operators, while the remaining 9.75 crore use 2G network of the four operators. – UNB
