Dhaka, Dec 2 – December, the month of Victory when Bangladesh was emerged victorious as an independent country in 1971 after the surrender of Pakistani occupation forces following a nine-month war, began on Sunday.Different sociocultural, political and professional bodies and institutions will celebrate the month through different programmes.
On December 14, the nation will observe the Martyred Intellectuals Day to commemorate those intellectuals who were killed systematically by the Pakistan occupation forces and their local collaborators at the fag-end of the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
On this day in 1971, country’s renowned academicians, doctors, engineers, journalists, artists, teachers and other eminent personalities were dragged out of their homes, blindfolded and taken to unknown places and then brutally tortured and slaughtered.
Their bodies were later dumped at Rayerbazar, Mirpur and some other killing fields in the capital.
On December 16, the country will celebrate the Victory Day to pay deep homage to the martyrs who laid down their lives for the country.
On this day in 1971, Pakistani occupation forces surrendered after a nine-month war resulting in a free, independent and sovereign Bangladesh.
The celebrations of the day will start with 31 gun salutes. President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will pay tributes to the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing wreaths at the National Mausoleum at Savar with the rise of the sun.
Besides, the national flag will be hoisted atop government, semi-government, autonomous and private offices across the country. – UNB
