Murder suspect killed in Chattogram ‘gunfight’

A youth was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Majher Ghona of Bayazid Bostami area on early Friday, several hours after his arrest.

The deceased – Md Emdad, 38, son of Farid Ahmed of Shershah colony – was accused in five cases, including murder.

Priton Sarkar, officer-in-charge of Bayezid Bostami Police Station, said they arrested Emdad on Thursday night for his alleged involvement in the murder of one Ripon, who was stabbed to death on December 31.

Later, they conducted a drive with Emdad to recover firearms, he said.

Paritran Talukdar, assistant commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police’s Bayezid zone, said criminals fired on the police team when it reached Majher Ghona, triggering a gunfight.

“Emdad sustained gunshot wounds during the skirmish. When police took him to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, doctors pronounced him dead,” Talukdar said.
