The National Art Exhibition concluded on July 23 at the National Art Gallery of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), Segunbagicha in the city.
The exhibition featured a display of 322 artworks by 310 artists. The mediums include watercolour, oil, mixed media, acrylic, sculptures (in different mediums like copper, metal, iron, stainless steel, silver, plastic) prints (etching, aquatint, lithograph, collograph, linograph, serigraph) crafts, ceramics, installations and video art.
The artists’ mode of expressions are varied — realistic, semi-realistic, photo realism, pure-abstraction, semi-abstraction, abstract expressionism, expressionism, impressionism and neo-expressionism. The participating artists’ tended to experiment with new mediums and their works were suggestive of those traits.
The primary selection committee comprised of artists — Mostafizul Haque, Anisuzzaman Anis and others. The jury committee for selecting the best artworks for awards included renowned artists — Abdus Shakoor Shah, Mohammad Eunus, Ranjit Das and architect cum art critic Professor Shamsul Wares.
On the concluding day, artist Mostafizul Haque (Professor, Drawing and Painting Department, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka), artists Mustafa Zaman and Shawn Akhand were present as guests and read out their papers. Ashraful Alam Paplu, Director of the Department of Fine Arts, BSA, delivered the welcome address. Liaquat Ali Lucky, Director General of BSA presided over the event.
This year, artist Kamruzzaman won prestigious Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Award for his work ‘Global Warming’. Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Honourable Mention Awards were given to four artists—Tanvir Mahmud, Ruhul Karim Rumee, Sahid Kazi and Rafat Ahmed Badhon.
This exhibition is organised biennially by the Department of Fine Arts, BSA. Initiated in 1975, the exhibition has so far earned recognition from art-lovers as a celebration of modern artworks by artists from across the nation.
