Nomination filed, many seats have lone candidates

Filing of nomination papers for the next parliamentary polls ended at

5 pm on Monday. Candidates of the Awami League, Jatiya Party and
others submitted their nomination papers to the returning officers on
the last date for filing.
Opposition BNP and its allies, who have rejected the election
schedule, did not submit their nominations.
The Opposition has been insisting that the polls be held under a
non-party government.
The Election Commission has not extended the deadline for filing
nomination papers.
EC Deputy Secretary Mihir Sarwar told journalists they had not
received any such directive from the commission.
He said the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) had a meeting with the
four other Commissioners at 4.30pm.
CEC Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad had said on Sunday that the schedule for
filing nominations would remain unchanged.
He, however, said if Awami League and BNP could come to a settlement
and the Opposition joined the polls, then the issue would be viewed
differently.-bdnews24.com
UNB adds: Former Home Minister Dr Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir is likely to
be elected MP unopposed from Chandpur-1 constituency (Kachua) if his
candidacy stands valid. Although Monday was the last date for filing
nomination, no other candidates, except for MK Alamgir, have filed
papers to contest the 10th parliamentary polls, billed for January 5,
from the seat. The lone candidate from the parliamentary seat
submitted his nomination paper to assistant returning officer and UNO
of Kachua Zia Ahmed Sumon on Monday. In a televised address to the
nation, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on November
25 announced the schedule for the national election. As per the
polls schedule, the deadline for submission of nomination papers was
December 2 (today) and the scrutiny of the nomination papers is on
December 5 and 6. If the nomination of MK Alamgir is not rejected
during the scrutiny, he is expected to be declared MP unopposed from
the constituency. Meanwhile, nine other candidates, including former
Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni, have filed nominations for the rest
four seats in the district. Of them, Dipu Moni submitted her
nomination paper to contest the national election from Chandpur-3
constituency (Sadar-Haimchar) on Monday.
