Petrol pump part-timer set afire by coworkers in Dhaka City

A petrol pump operator was set on fire early Tuesday allegedly by a fellow worker in Salauddin Filling Station at Shyampur of the city.

The victim Riad Hossain, 20, who sustained 40 percent burns, was admitted to the Sheikh Hasina National Burn Institute, police said.

Officer-in-Charge of Shyampur Police Station Mofijul Islam said police already arrested three people in this regard.

The arrestees were Mahmud Hasan Emon, 22, Md Forhad Ahmed Pavel, 28 and Shahidul Islam Roni, 18. All three are his coworkers, who used to spend the night together at their workplace.

Victim’s father said Riad is a student of Siddheswari College and had been working at the filling station part-time.

Riad’s co-workers poured patrol on his body and set him on fire, he said. Sub-inspector Mahbub said Riad’s fellow worker Emon, was asleep when Riad went to call him for duty. Unable to wake Emon, Riad sprayed a little bit of octane on his face.

Angered by this, Emon took a container of octane, poured it on Riad and set him on fire, leaving him with critical burn injuries, the cop said.

Other employees of the petrol pump later took Riad to the hospital, he said. Doctors said he remains in the ICU in critical state.
