Premier Hockey: Mohammedan-Mariner match abandoned halfway through

Dhaka- The title-deciding match of the Green Delta Insurance Metropolis Premier Division Hockey League between two neighbours — league leader Dhaka Mohammedan SC and defending champions Dhaka Mariner Young’s Club — was abandoned halfway through at Maulana Bhashani National Stadium on Thursday.
The crucial match was forced to be abandoned at 4th minute when it was locked 1-1 as players of both the teams intentionally were protesting the decisions of match umpires during the match.

Now, the league committee will take decision about the fate of the match. The traditional black and white team, Mohammedan SC, with 39 points needed just a draw against holders Mariner Young’s Club to clinch the league crown while Mariner Young’s Club with 36 points needed an outright victory against Mohammedan to stay in the title race along with Dhaka Abahani Limited.

A win for Mariner Young’s Club wins means Mohammedan SC, Mariner Young’s and Abahan Limited all have 39 points each to meet each other again for a title-deciding play-offs.

Earlier in the day’s first match, Sonali Bank Club outplayed Ajax SC by 5-1 goals at the same venue.

Fazle Hossain struck twice, Prosenjit Roy, Deem Islam Imon and Tanjim Ahmed scored one each for the winners while Rahat Sarwar netted the consolation goal for the losers.UNB
