Probe into deaths of 84 elephants in Chittagong sought

Dhaka, Aug 24 – A writ petition was filed with the High Court seeking directives to investigate the deaths of 84 elephants in 19 years in Chittagong district and form an investigation body to look into the incidents. Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Manoj Kumar Bhowmik filed the writ petition.
Secretary to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Chief Forest conservator and forest conservator of Chattogram region have been made respondents to the writ.
A report of a daily newspaper, published on August 23, was attacked to the writ petition.
According to Chattogram Forest Circle, 106 elephants have died in the last 19 years. Of these, 32 died of accidents, 29 from illness, 22 from old age complications, 15 from electrocution and eight from firing, said the report.
Advocate Manoj Kumar said the writ was filed seeking a high-level committee to look into the death of the elephants. – UNB
