Protecting wild animals to have better environment stressed

Speakers at a function here on Wednesday stressed the need for protecting and preserving wild animals anyhow to have a better environment with bio-diversity.
“Animal populations are in the verge of extinction due to different threats including poaching, habitat loss and overuse of natural resources. If such the trend continues, they will disappear from the environment in near future, there is no doubt”, they said.They made the remarks while addressing a workshop on conserving the wild animals at the auditorium of Katabari union parishad under Gobindaganj upazila in the districtNature and Environment Preservation Organisation (NEPO) in cooperation with the Department of Wild Animal Management and Nature Preservation, Rajshahi organised the function for the aboriginal people.Rajshahi divisional forest officer Mollah Rezaul Karim addressed the function as the chief guest and also presented a key note paper on the subject as the resource person.With Union Parishad Chairman ZHMS Mahmud in the chair, the function was also addressed, among others, by president of NEPO and bird lover Ahammad Ullah, members Robiul Islam and Sohel Rana, women indigenous leader Amili Hemron and journalist SM Kabir Russel.As the indigenous men went out of their homes in every dry season and killed local wild animals like jackal, fox, hare, mongoose for their food, an emphasis was given to create much awareness among them in a bid to stop the wild animal killings.More than 60 indigenous men including Satal living at the union took part in the workshop and gave their commitment not to kill wild animals further. -BSS, Gaibandha
