Dhaka, Apr 09 –The protesters postponed their movement until May 7 following the assurancefrom the government to bring ‘logical reform’ in the existing quota system, said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Monday. -UNB
The minster came up with the information while talking to reporters after a meeting with a 20-member delegation of Sadharan Chhatra Odhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad held at the Secretariat.
“A 20-member delegation sat with us and five of them placed their demands during the meeting. We do politics for the sake of the next generation, not for the next election,” he said adding, “We’ve heard their demands and the existing quota system will be scrutinised, and the government will announce the decision regarding the quota reform by May 7.”
“I assured them saying we’ll look into the protesters’ demands positively,” said Obaidul.
About attack on VC’s residence he said, “I asked the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner to take action against those involved in the attack after examining the video footage and release the innocent ones.”
The government will provide medical services to those injured during the police action while staging demonstrations to press for their demand.
Besides, Hasan Al Mamun, convener of Sadharan Chhatra Odhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad also disclosed their decision before the reporters after the meeting.
The meeting also decided to release the arrestees unconditionally, he said.
Earlier, a 20-memebr delegation of Sadharan Chhatra Odhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad (Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council) went to the Secretariat and held a meeting with the minister.
Awami League senior leaders Mahabub-ul-Alam Hanif,Jahangir Kabir Nanak, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, AKM Enamul Haq Shamim, Khalid Mahmud, Advocate Afzal Hossain, Advocate Mrinal Kanti Das, Ashim Kumar, SM Kamal Hossain, Barrister Biplab Barua and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia were, among others, present at the meeting.
Students of different universities across the country staged demonstrations on Sunday and Monday demanding that the exiting quota system in public service be reformed.
