Rajshahi city to be free from garbage and polythene

Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) AHM Khairuzzaman Liton has said the city areas will be declared free from garbage, waste and polythene by January of next year.He added that the city corporation has adopted diversified measures to free the city from waste and polythene use as it is being adjudged as the major problem of urban pollution.
Mayor Liton made this observation while distributing dustbins among the businessmen at Luxmipur Bazar in the city yesterday adding that role of the businessmen is very important towards supplementing the efforts.
The mayor will distribute 12,000 dustbins among the businesspersons in phases so that they could keep their respective places clean.
RCC panel mayors Shariful Islam Babu, Rajab Ali and Tahera Begum, president of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Md Muniruzzaman and general secretary of Shop Owners Association Golam Sarwar were present on the occasion.
Expressing his commitment of turning Rajshahi into a beautiful city, Liton said, “I want to regain the previous image of green and clean city through making it eye-catching one on a priority basis”.
The city corporation has taken decision of getting adequate support from business communities as they have a pioneering role in substantial and sustainable reduction of polythene manufacturing and marketing.
Mayor Liton said sound health was the most important wealth and urged all city residents, including the traders and businesspersons, to maintain cleanliness to combat environment pollution and reduce the spread of diseases.
He said, ‘We indiscriminately pollute our environment. RCC’s cleanliness effort is not enough on its own. Concerted efforts are needed to change our habits. We have to clean and also stop throwing garbage to protect our environment.’
He highlighted the importance of maintaining cleanliness on office premises, institutions, homesteads and open and market places in the city, reports BSS from Rajshahi.
