Rangpur hosts Mayor’s Cup T20 cricket tournament

RANGPUR – All preparations have been completed to host the first ever Mujib Year Mayor’s Cup T20 Cricket Tournament in Rangpur city from January 10 next.

Under management of Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC), the tournament is going to be held with the overall cooperation of Rangpur District Sports’ Association.

Former national cricket team captain and Member of Parliament Naimur Rahman Durjoy will inaugurate the magnificent cricket tournament at Rangpur Collectorate Cricket Garden in the city on January 10.

Mayor of Rangpur Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa disclosed this at a press conference held at Nagar Bhaban here on Tuesday.

At the press conference, the Mayor said this is the first time that the Mayor’s Cup T20 Cricket Tournament is going to be held in Rangpur city.

Eight teams from the RpCC area including one from Rangpur district administration are taking part in the tournament.

The tournament will once again encourage the dormant cricketers and sports arena of Rangpur city.

“World class cricketers will be created in the Rangpur region through this tournament,” he said, adding that the one-time star players of the national cricket team are being represented in eight teams.

The player draft has already been completed in addition to tidying up the team by keeping them as icon players.

The eight teams including Haribhanga Carters, Teesta Thunders, Ghaghot Gladiators, Shyamasundari The Beauty, Tajhat Warriors, KD Canal Fighters, Begum Rokeya Pioneer and Chikley Challengers are participating in the tournament.

The icons players are: national under-19 World Cup winning cricketer Akbar Ali in Haribhanga, Sajedul in Teesta, Alauddin Babu in Ghaghot, Ariful Haque in Shyamasundari, Rubeno in Tajhat, Suhrawardy Shuvo in KD Canal, Pappu in Begum Rokeya and Nasir Hossain in Chikley.

Mayor Mostafa said that various players from Rangpur Cricket Ground have got teams in this year’s event.

He hoped that these teams with different names would increase the profile of Rangpur and gain a reputation for producing good quality players.

“The game will start at 9 am every day. In two matches daily, four teams will compete against each other at bat. The final match of the tournament will be held on January 16 at the same ground,” he said.

To make the tournament a grand success, a massive publicity campaign has been started all over the city.

“The tournament calendar will be released on Wednesday,” he added.
