Dhaka, May 11 (UNB) – BNP on Saturday alleged that the incidents of repression on women and children are growing in the country as the offenders are going unpunished on political ground.
“Though both the Prime Minister and the Speaker (of parliament) are women in Bangladesh, it is regrettable that repression on women continues unabated. The government is responsible for eliminating the repression, but we see sometimes it rather pampers the offenders,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Speaking at a human-chain programme, he also alleged that most of the offenders who indulge in rape and violence against women and children belong to Awami League. “They’re let off the hook for their political identity.”
Rizvi also alleged that the government cannot resist the serious social crimes like rape as the ruling party men are not getting punishment for the offences.
Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal formed the human chain in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, demanding the highest punishment of those who raped and killed a private hospital nurse, Shahinur Akter Tania, in Kishoreganj’s Bajitpur upazila.
Rizvi urged the government to enforce law and ensure exemplary punishment to those involved in repression on women and children to contain the social menace.
He alleged that the government has destroyed democracy by snatching people’s all the basic rights, including the right to expression.
The BNP leader said their chairperson Khaleda Zia has been kept in jail in ‘false cases’ only for raising her voice in favour of democracy and people’s rights.
