Experts at a discussion here have put importance on ensuring safe motherhood, healthy pregnancy period and safe delivery for healthier babies to further reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates.
The observations came at a post-rally discussion arranged at the conference room of the Civil Surgeon Office on Sadar Hospital premises in the city on Saturday afternoon in observance of the National Safe Motherhood Day- 2016.
Earlier, the district health administration in association with BRAC Health, Lamb Hospital, National Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Programme and World Vision brought out a procession from the Civil Surgeon Office and paraded the city streets.
Health officials, NGO activists, physicians, health workers, nurses, mothers, public representatives, teachers, students, women community leaders, socio-cultural activists and prominent persons participated in the procession.
Besides, NGOs including Surjer Hanshi Clinic, Marie Stopes Clinic, Light House, Family Planning Association of Bangladesh (FPAB) and other organisations also organised colourful rallies to observe the day.
Divisional Director (Health) Dr Mozammel Hossain addressed the post-rally discussion arranged at the conference room of the Civil Surgeon as the chief guest with Civil Surgeon Dr Himangshu Lal Roy in the chair.
Deputy Director of the Department of Family Planning Dr Sheikh Md Saidul Islam, Sadar Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Afzal Hossain Talukder, Medical Officer of FPAB Dr Samorpita Ghosh Tania, addressed the discussion moderated by District Health Education Officer Mohammad Shahjahan.
The speakers stressed on ensuring safe pregnancy, delivery and motherhood for pregnant women at the hospitals, health complexes and other places as it would help the nation in achieving set targets of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Highly lauding the government efforts for providing health services at the union and ward levels to improve health condition of mothers and babies, they asked for sensitising the common people about ensuring sound health of mothers and infants.
The chief guest put importance on coordinated efforts of all government and non-government organisations concerned to ensure safe motherhood, safe pregnancy and delivery for building a healthier nation through reducing maternal and neonatal deaths.
