Renewable energies vital for protecting climate, life

Environmentalists and development activists addressing a youth conference opined substantial and sustainable protection of natural resources together with promotion and using of renewable energies is very important for protecting both climate and life.

They viewed there is an enormous scope of reducing the gradually mounting pressure on fossil fuel through boosting use of renewable energies in both rural and urban areas. Time has come to protect the natural resources including the wetlands and water bodies for restoring green atmosphere.

They were addressing the post-rally inaugural session of a daylong ‘Green Fuel and Youth Climate Conference 2016’ at open stage of Public Library in Rajshahi metropolis today.

Mayor-in-charge of Rajshahi City Corporation Nizam-ul-Azim and Assistant Professor Avijit Roy from Department of Anthropology of Rajshahi University addressed the session as chief and special guests respectively with green personality Kartik Pramanik in the chair.

Bangladesh Resource Center for Indigenous Knowledge (BARCIK), a collective initiative for participatory research, policy advocacy and campaign, arranged the conference in association with 17 youth organizations with the main thrust of inspiring and sensitizing the youths towards promoting and protecting the renewable energies.

River researcher Mahbub Siddique and Coordinator of Youth Organizations Rubel Hossain Mintu also spoke.

During his concept paper presentation, Shahidul Islam, Researcher and Regional Coordinator of BARCIK, mentioned instead of depending on only the fossil fuel emphasis should be given to enriching the renewable energy sources to face the energy challenges.

Availability of energy from different sources is vital for the present life in meeting the challenge of the ever-increasing demand for energy.

He emphasised the need for wide-ranging use of energy efficient products to reduce the existing pressure on power demands. Using energy efficient electrical appliances has become an urgent need to reduce electricity cost coupled with energy conservation which is essential for addressing the energy crises.

All concerned should work together for building social awareness about a judicious use of fossil fuel and ending its misuse. Besides, the issue of converting the irrigation system into solar power-based one should be taken into consideration immediately.

In his remarks, Mayor Azim highlighted the enormous aspects of the sector in both rural and urban areas of the region including the vast Barind tract and said there should have adequate measures of making those accesses for the poor and marginalised population.

Protection of wetlands and other water bodies from further degradation is very important for biodiversity conservation besides existence of other living beings, reports BSS from Rajshahi.
