Rice price up in retail markets

The wholesale rice price in Dhaka city markets fell marginally by 0.8 percent, down to Tk 30.4 per kg, in two weeks ending on July 11.According to the latest fortnightly foodgrain outlook of the National Food Policy Capacity Strengthening Programme, the retail price, however, marked a rise by 1.5 percent up to Tk 33 per kg.
It said the wholesale and retail prices are now 27.4 percent and 15.3 percent higher respectively than a year ago.
Although Bangladesh has achieved self-sufficient in food, 30 metric tonnes of rice was imported by the private sector during the period (two weeks).
About the public food distribution, the foodgrain outlook said the total food distribution budget for 2013-14 is 2.74 million tonnes against the actual distribution of 2.09 million tonnes in fiscal 2012-13.
Over the fortnight, over 17 thousand metric tonnes food grains were distributed through social safety net programmes. – UNB
