Dhaka – Rights body Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) on Wednesday expressed deep concern over the ‘missing’ of two rescued hostages of the Holey Artisan Bakery attack, UNB news agency reported.
Abul Hasnat Rezaul Karim, a businessman and former teacher of North South University, and Tahmid Hasib Khan, a Bangladeshi student studying in Canada, were rescued along with 11 others during the commando operation at the Spanish restaurant on July 2 following a 12-hour hostage standoff.The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police took the due under their custody for interrogation as suspects in the incident. The law enforcement agencies claimed that they set them free after interrogation.
However, their family members claimed that they remained traceless.
In a statement signed by ASK acting executive director M Nur Khan, the rights body demanded that authorities concerned should take appropriate steps and the law enforcement agencies demonstrate highest professional attitude in this regard.
The ASK thinks it is the constitutional responsibility of the government and the law enforcement agencies to ensure security of every citizen of the country, the statement said.
It is an utter violation of human rights if anyone remains out of trace after being taken into custody even if he or she is a suspect or offender, it added.
The ASK demanded a clear statement from the authorities concerned about their whereabouts and informing the family members about it.
Twenty hostages, including 17 foreign nationals, were killed by the militants, while five militants and one suspected associate of the attackers were killed during the commando operation inside the café on July 2.
