RU VC left campus after irregular appointment of 141 persons

Rajshahi – The outgoing vice-chancellor of Rajshahi University professor M Abdus Sobhan temporarily appointed 141 persons to different positions of the university disregarding prohibitions from the Education Ministry and the University Grants Commission (UGC). He left the campus under police guard on Thursday noon after finalising the appointments.
Earlier the vice-chancellor released the registrar Abdus Salam from his post when he disagreed to sign on those appointment papers and he made assistant registrar Mamun-Ur-Rashid the acting registrar.
A total of 9 teachers, 23 section officers, 24 assistant employees and 85 higher and lower assistants were appointed by the acting registrar Mamun-Ur-Rashid’s.
Job expectant BCL activists of Rajshahi city unit on Thursday noon attacked the university officials on some appointment issues. Police charged baton on the spot and left at least 5 people injured.
Job aspirants started entering the vice-chancellor’s house at around 2 pm, started collecting appointment letters and joined the selected posts.
The outgoing registrar Abdus Salam said, I don’t know anything about these appointments. I was just being pressurised for doing some wicked activities. That’s why I was on self-quarantine for the last two days.
The outgoing vice-chancellor professor M Abdus Sobhan took charge of the university on May 07, 2017, for the second term. After taking charge he was being accused of many irregularities including the appointment of his own son-in-law to the university. Last year, the Education Ministry banned all sort of appointments in the university after getting proof of irregularities through a UGC’s investigation.
Pro-vice-chancellor professor Ananda Kumar Saha of Rajshahi University took charge of the vice-chancellor’s routine responsibility as the term of the outgoing vice-chancellor professor M Abdus Sobhan ended on Thursday.
He was appointed to the post on Thursday evening under the order of the president of Bangladesh and signed by Deputy Secretary of the Education ministry Shamima Begum.
According to the notice, pro-vice-chancellor Ananda Kumar Saha will perform the vice-chancellor’s routine activities until the appointment of the next vice-chancellor.
The outgoing vice-chancellor professor M Abdus Sobhan ended his second on May 6 Thursday. – RU Correspondent
