Marking the 55th birth anniversary of late renowned singer, lyricist and journalist Sanjeeb Choudhury, the 8th edition of a memorial concert titled ‘Sanjeeb Utsab 2019’ was held yesterday at the Sanjeeb Chattar of Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of University of Dhaka, in the city. In association with Dhaka University Cultural Society, Dhaka University Band Society and Ajob Karkhana, the organiser of the event was Sanjeeb Utsab Udjapon Parishad. Starting at 4 pm, the concert lasted upto 10 pm.
Artistes and bands like Joy Shahriar, Elita Karim, GaanKobi, Shohortoli, Arjan Band and others performed at the event.
Sanjeeb Choudhury was one of the two main members of popular Bangladeshi Band Dalchhut. He acted as the composer in Dalchhut’s four albums and wrote and tuned many songs. He has one solo album named Swapnobaji. As a journalist, he worked for the newspaper Ajker Kagoj, Bhorer Kagoj, and Jaijaidin. He was an activist during the mass upsurge against the autocratic regime of Hossain Mohammad Ershad.
Sanjeeb was born on December 25 in 1964 at Baniachang Upazila, Habiganj. He graduated from the Mass Communication and Journalism Department of Dhaka University. During the mass movement against Ershad his poems gained popularity. He initially sang at a band named Shongkhochil. During the mid 90s, he along with Bappa Mazumder formed the band Dalchhut. In 1996, Dalchhut released their first album ‘Ahh’. Dalchhut’s second album was ‘Hridoypur’, which happened to be their most popular album. In this album, Bappa and Sanjeeb sang the song ‘Gari Chole Na’ of renowned folk maestro Shah Abdul Karim. ‘Ami Tomakei Bole Debo’, sang by Sanjeeb Choudhury, is another popular song of this album. In Dalchhut’s third album Aakaashchuri, Sanjeeb sang the folk tuned song ‘Bioscope’. Sanjeeb’s solo album Swapnobaji was released in 2005. In 2007, Dalchhut’s fourth album ‘Jochhnabihar’ was released after a long break. Sanjeeb wrote the title song ‘Jochhnabihar.
He died on November 19, 2007.
