Saturday’s bomb attack aimed at cops: Dhaka Police chief

Dhaka, Sept 1 (UNB) – The bomb attack at the city’s Science Laboratory crossing was carried out targeting policemen, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia on Sunday.

“The attack was made basically targeting the policemen near Science Laboratory on Saturday. The bomb explosion took place when the road was empty due to traffic signal [on the other side] ,” said the DMP Commissioner while talking to reporters at the DMP Headquarters on Sunday.

He further said, “Police are scrutinising the circumstantial evidence of attacks and the attempted attacks on policemen in the last several months.”

LGRD Minister Tazul Islam’s protection team member ASI Shahabuddin and traffic constable Aminul Islam were there on the road only. It seems that the main target of the attack was police personnel, he said.

The DMP Commissioner claimed that the incident of Science Lab has similarity with the attacks on traffic police at Gulistan, police vehicle at Malibagh, recovery of bombs from Paltan Police Box and Khamarbari police outpost.

Terrorist groups were involved in previous attacks, he said adding that there has been marked progress in the investigations into those attacks on police personnel.

About claiming responsibility for all the attacks by an international group through website posts, he said, “Militant and terrorist attacks are now a global problem. We’ve been trying to know whether those claims are true or false.”

Assuring the city dwellers of their security, the DMP Commissioner said there is no reason to be panicked.
