Slain Nusrat’s father fears retribution from killers

Feni, Oct 24 (UNB) – Father of tragically slain teenage student Nusrat Jahan Rafi has expressed his anxiety over the safety and well-being of his family members after a lower court handed down the death penalty to 16 individuals convicted in the case for murder on Thursday.

That is after a number of the convicts reportedly threatened to take revenge on the family.

AKM Musa, Nusrat’s father, told UNB that “the convicts threatened of taking revenge after hearing the verdict at the court, which increased the threat to our security several times. Now I am appalled about security of my elderly father, wife and two brothers of Nusrat.”

Members of Nusrat’s family also took the stand as witnesses to testify against those who perpetrated the diabolical murder of the brave young girl, who just weeks before her death had stood up to expose the perversion of her madrasah principal, landing him in jail.

Alleging that the convicts spoke in a very threatening and objectionable manner in the court, where they were brought as the verdict was pronounced today, Musa could only appeal to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for another intervention to reassure them.

“We received adequate security with the intervention of the prime minister earlier. We still want her intervention and enhanced security measures. We are fearful from the way they threatened.”

Contacted, Moin Uddin Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Sonagazi Police Station, said additional police members along with DB police were deployed to ensure security of Nusrat’s family.

“We are ready to avoid any unpleasant occurrence,” he added.

Nusrat was set on fire on April 6 on the roof of a madrasah she attended, allegedly by people including some of her fellow students loyal to Principal Sirajuddoula. She suffered 70-80 percent burns, and despite pulling out all the stops, doctors at the famed Burn Unit of Bangladesh Medical College Hospital (BMCH) were unable to pull-off another miracle, as Nusrat left this world on April 10.

A case was filed with Sonagazi Police Station on April 8. Police pressed charges in court against 16 people on May 29. A tribunal on Thursday sentenced all the 16 people to death for their roles in killing Nusrat.
