Legendary Indian actor, Soumitra Chatterjee, was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata yesterday .
The veteran actor was taken to the hospital after he complained of breathing problems.
The 84-year-old actor, who frequently collaborated with Satyajit Ray and appeared in 14 film directed by Ray, was admitted to the hospital around 9.30 am.
A hospital statement said that he is suffering from respiratory tract infection and is out of danger.
The actor, who appeared in over 250 films, is a recipient of the prestigious Legion of Honour from the French government.
Initial tests were done, and the test results showed that the actor was also suffering from some age-related health issues, such as potassium and sodium imbalance.
The actor’s daughter, Poulami Basu, told the media that his condition is stable.
“There is no threat to his life,” she said.
In his six-decade long film career, Soumitra Chatterjee has acted in Apur Sansar, the last of the Apu Trilogy, besides the penultimate film by Ray, Sakha Prasakha.
He also featured in a number of films by Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha and other modern day directors.
Soumitra Chatterjee is also a poet, non-fiction writer, theatre personality, editor of a popular literary magazine and elocutionist.
