Public Administration Minister Syed Ashraful Islam on Tuesday called upon freedom fighters to remain alert to make sure that the incident of 1975 is not repeated.“We’ve achieved independence through the Liberation War. We failed to save the leader under whose leadership we had achieved independence. We also lost state power. We’re unfortunate that after a few years of independence the Father of Nation was killed along with his family members,” he said.
Syed Ashraf, also Awami League general secretary, said this while addressing a discussion organised by Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Central Command Council at the Institute of Diploma Engineers in the city.The ruling party general secretary said, “We’re unfortunate that after a few years of independence the Father of the Nation was killed along with his family members. It is exceptional incident in the history. Gandhi was shot dead. But his family members were not killed.”He went on saying, “Bangladesh is an example in the world in this regard. On one hand, we’re a brave nation, and we’re a nation of betrayers on the other. So, we need to remain alert. We need mental preparation in this regard. I don’t want to elaborate. Indication is enough.”Ashraf said there calm prevails before storm. “When there’s no storm and the leaves of trees remain unmoved, it is the time to get frightened.”“That is why you’ll always remain alert. We had failed to save Bangabandhu. It’s the freedom fighters who have to take responsibility so that such incident can’t take place for the second time,” he added.Mentioning that Muktijoddha Sangsad is an independent organisation, Syed Ashraf said the organisation can only run by a committee elected by freedom fighters.Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Huq highlighted various steps of the government taken for the welfare of freedom fighters.Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, among others, spoke on the occasion held with Muktijoddha Sangsad Central Command Council chairman Major General (retd) Helal Morshed Khan in the chair.
