Students want DU Proctor to go

A group of Dhaka University (DU) students on Monday demanded resignation of their Proctor Prof AKM Golam Rabbani for his ‘failure’ to ensure a secure campus as the protest against assault on teachers allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men continued.

The demand was made from a human formed under the banner of ‘Students against Repression’ at the foot of Raju Sculpture around 1:10 pm, protesting the attacks on the DU teachers and quota movement activists.

The students also brought out a procession and held a rally in front of the Proctor’s office around 2 pm.

Megh Mollar, a 3rd-year student of Department of Peace and Conflict Studies, said they will submit a memorandum containing their demand to Dhaka University Vice-chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzaman on Tuesday noon.

Earlier in the day, students and teachers of DU International Relations department formed another human chain on the campus protesting the assault on Associate Professor of the department Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan and two other teachers of the university allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men.

They demanded exemplary punishment of the attackers.

Besides, the teachers and students of DU Economics department formed another human chain, protesting the assault on two of their students by three ‘BCL’ activists and demanding a safe campus.

On Saturday evening, some ‘BCL’ activists beat up two students of the department in front of Surja Sen Hall.

At Jahangirnagar University, teachers and students staged a demonstration demanding immediate punishment of those involved in the attacks on the DU teachers and students.

The students and teachers under the banner of Sikkhak Sikkharti Oikay Mancha’ brought out a silent procession wearing black clothes in front of the Social Science Building which ended at the Central Shaheed Minar after parading the main streets on the campus.

Besides, the students of the History and Philosophy department boycotted their classes and exams demanding punishment of the attackers.

On Sunday, BCL leaders and activists allegedly assaulted some quota movement activists and teachers of the Dhaka University again while they were forming a human chain on the Central Shaheed Minar premises in the city, demanding immediate release of the arrested quota movement leaders and punishment of the attackers.
