Susanto emerges champion in Sheikh Hasina Int’l Online Chess

DHAKA  – GM Megaranto Susanto of Indonesia emerged unbeaten champion in the Joytu Sheikh Hasina International Online Chess Tournament that concluded today (Saturday) at virtual platform.

The tournament was arranged on the occasion of 74th birthday celebration of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

GM Megaranto earned seven points out of nine games to clinch the title and GM S L Narayanan became runner-up while GM M Tabatabbaei Amin of Iran finished 3rd position in the three-day meet.

GM Megaranto, GM Narayanan and GM Tabatabaei all three players earned seven points but their place was decided in tie breaking system.

Five players bagged 6.5 points each. Their positions are 4th-GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong of Vietnam, 5th-GM Diptayan Ghosh of India, 6th-GM D Gukesh of India, 7th-R. R. Laxman of India and 8th-Jhon Paul Gomes
of Philippines.

Six players earned six points each. Their positions are 9th-IM Priasmoro Novendra of Indonesia, 10th- GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly of India, 11th- Volkov Sergey of Russia, 12th – FM Subrota Biswas of Bangladesh Navy, 13th- Mohammad Nubairshah Shaikh of India and FM Mohammad Javed of Bangladesh Navy.

Three players of Bangladesh Navy achieved top three positions among Bangladeshi players. They are FM Subrata placed 1st position and FM Javed become 2nd position and IM Abu Sufian Shakil finished 3rd position.

Seventh to 9th rounds games were held today (Saturday), in the 7h round matches, GM Megaranto split point with GM Diptayan, GM Gukesh drew with GM Thruong Son, GM Valkov split point with GM Tabatabaei, GM Narayan beat GM Antonio, IM Priasmoro beat Villamayor, GM Ganguly beat IM Nubairshah, IM Shakil beat GM Vishnu, GM Razib beat FM Taibur.

In 8th round matches, GM Thruong Son split point with GM Megaranto, GM Diptayan drew with IM Priesmoro, GM Narayanan beat GM Razib, GM Tabatabaei beat GM Ganguly, GM Laxman drew with GM Volkov, GM Gomes
beat IM Shakil, GM Gukesh defeated FM Parag, FM Subrota split point with M Zia and Shafiq outclassed GM Villamayor.

In 9th or last round matches, GM Megaranto split point with GM Narayanan, GM Gomes drew with GM Thruogn Son, GM Gukesh split point with GM Diptayan, GM Tabatabaei beat IM Priesmoro, GM Laxman beat Shafiq, GM Volkov drew with Shakil, GM Ganguly defeated IM Fahad and FM Subrato outplayed GM Vishnu.

The Prize distribution ceremony will be held tomorrow (Sunday) at 11 am at Hotel La Meridian in the city. State Minister for Youth and Sports Mohammad Zahid Ahsan Russell, MP, is expected to preset in the ceremony as the chief guest.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Bangladesh Chess Federation (BCF) president and also president of South Asian Chess Federation Dr Benazir Ahmed will present as the special guest while Asian Chess Federation president Sheikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nehyan is also expected to join virtually in the prize distribution ceremony as the special guest.

Canadian University Chairman Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat will preside over the prize distribution ceremony. The total prize money of the tournament is U$$ 6,000 with the champions receive U$$ 1200, 2nd prize U$$ 800, 3rd prize U$$ 500, 4th prize U$$-300, 5th to 9th prizes U$$ 200 each and 10th to 16th Prizes U$$ 100 each.

In addition, Taka one lac and five thousand cash prizes will be given to the winners’. A total of seventy four chess players – 49 players from Bangladesh and 25 players from fourteen countries — took part in the prestigious
tournament. Among the seventy four players, seventeen are grandmasters and six are International Masters.
