Suspect Farabi placed under 10-day remand

Alleged Hizb-ut-Tahrir man, Shafiur Rahman Farabi, who has been marked as the prime suspect in the blogger Avijit Roy murder case, was placed on a 10-day remand on Tuesday for interrogation.
Magistrate Md Rezaul Islam of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka passed the order after Inspector Fazlur Rahman of the Detective Branch (DB) of police, produced him to the court with a 10-day remand plea.
Farabi, had allegedly repeated his death threats to blogger and writer Avijit. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested him at Jatrabari Bus Terminal of the capital when he was about to leave for Chittagong on Monday.Earlier, Farabi was detained twice, first in 2010 for vandalism on Chittagong University campus and then on February 24 in 2013 for issuing death threat to the imam who conducted namaz-e-janaza of blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider. Rajib was chopped to death in Mirpur area near his residence on February 15 of the same year.
Farabi was indicted under the ICT Act following his arrest in 2013. But later, the self-proclaimed Islamist blogger was released on bail after about six months.
According to Farabi’s facebook profile, he studied Physics at Chittagong University. He hails from Brahmanbria Sadar upazila.
On last Thursday night, some unidentified assailants killed Avijit and badly wounded his wife Rafida Ahmed Banya on Dhaka University Campus after the couple came out of the Ekushey Boi Mela. The following day, his father Ajay Roy, a retired professor at Dhaka University filed the murder case with Shahbagh Police Station accusing unknown assailants.
Farabi again came to the forefront of discussion after Avijit was hacked to death and his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya seriously injured on Dhaka University campus on Thursday night. – Court Correspondent
