Suspected criminal killed in Chittagong ‘gunfight’

Chattogram, July 28 (UNB) – A suspected criminal was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Banshkhali upazila on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Zaker, 40, son of Badshah Mia alias Baishya of Purbo Sambal Chhararkul village in the upazila. He was accused in a total of 24 cases, Rab claimed.

Major Mehedi Hasan, commander of Rab-7 Chandgaon camp, said a team of the elite force conducted a drive at Zaker’s den in Sambal hilly area around 5pm after identifying it with the help of a drone.

Sensing Rab members’ presence, Zaker and his associates opened fire on them, forcing the law enforcers to fire back in self-defence, he said.

After the gunfight, Zaker was found lying dead on the spot and while his cohorts fled, Mehedi said, claiming that they recovered 11 firearms and huge ammunition from the spot.

A video clip of Zaker brandishing firearms went viral in Facebook recently. In the footage, he was seen taking tea keeping a firearm on his lap.
