Suspected drug trader killed in Chuadanga ‘gunfight’

Dhaka, Aug 30 (UNB) – Two ‘criminals’ were killed in separate ‘gunfights’ with members of law enforcement agencies in Chuadanga and Chattogram early Friday.

In Chuadanga, a suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with police at JoyrampurKathaltala in Damurhudaupazila early Friday.

The deceased was identified as RokonuzzamanRokon, 35, son of Abu BakkarSiddique of the upazila. He was wanted in 10 criminal cases.

Tipped off that two groups of drug peddlers were exchanging gunshots over establishing supremacy, a team of police went to the spot around 2:30 am, said SukumarBiswas, officer-in-charge of Damurhuda Police Station.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire on police, prompting them to fire back in self-defence, triggering a ‘gunfight’ among police and two groups of drug traders

At one stage, Rokon was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries while the other gang members managed to flee the scene.

Later, he was taken to Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

One LG gun, two cartridges, one sack of phensidyl and two sharp weapons were recovered from the spot.

In Chattogram, a suspected robber was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at East Chambol in Bashkhali upazila on Friday morning.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Iran, 35 of the upazila.

Tipped, off, a team of Rab-7 conducted a drive in the area around 8 am, said Major Mehedi Hasan, commanding officer of Chandgaon camp.

Sensing presence of the elite force members, the criminals opened fire on Rab men, forcing them to take action in self-defence.

After the gunfight, the Rab members recovered the bullet-hit body of Iran.

Thirteen firearms and a number of sharp weapons were recovered from the spot.
