Tapas Paul spends another New Year in jail

Tapas Paul, who was arrested on charges of defrauding depositors in a Ponzi scheme of Rose Valley group last year, has completed one year in jail on December 30, 2017. Yet, it seems like he will be spending New Year’s Eve in jail this year too.According to a NDTV report, the 59-year-old Tollywood actor was questioned for hours by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) prior to his arrest. Two of his residences in Kolkata were also raided by the CBI in 2015, from where several documents were seized.Paul was also a director in two companies of Rose Valley group.
The group had allegedly collected over Rs15,000 crore from depositors but failed to repay around Rs9,000 crore to its thousands of small investors by mid 2015. Following the “Rose Valeey chit fund scam,” the chairman of the company Gautam Kundu was then arrested by the Enforcement Directorate, reports the NDTV.
The actor turned lawmaker of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress, and two-time MP, has been hospitalized for much of his tenure in jail due to diabetes, blood pressure, kidney and liver complications. Paul’s wife, Nandini Paul, has been taking care of him at a public hospital in Bhubaneswar.
Meanwhile, his lawyer has applied for bail on medical grounds, which, the Odisha High Court will declare in January 2018.
Paul started his acting career with Tarun Majumder’s “Dadar Kirti” in 1980.
