The first phase of the special Employment Generation Project for the Poorest (EGPP) at Taka 3.79 crore began to benefit 4,749 beneficiaries including distressed women in Pirgachha upazila here from Saturday.
Chairmen Afsar Ali of Sadar union parishad and Abul Kalam Azad of Parul union parishad inaugurated the infrastructural development and earth-filling works under the EGPP at separate ceremonies as the chief guests.Representatives of Upazila Project Implementation Office Shamsul Haque, Awami League leader Fazlul Karim, President of Pirgachha Press Club Khorshed Alam, union members Abdul Gafur Sarker, Noor Mohammad, Ansar Ali and Jahangir Alam addressed the ceremonies.Besides, union parishad members Abul Kalam Azad, Hazrat Ali, Akher Sarker, Noya Miah, Anwara Begum, Al Azad, local elite Solaiman Ali, Mahfuzur Rahman, Sheuly Khatun and Abul Kashem were present.The speakers said the programme has launched the special EGPP to assist the jobless farm and day-labourers, distressed and poorer section people to lead normal life through earning better livelihoods
during the seasonal lean period.Under the programme, the government has allocated Taka 3.79 crore to assist 4,749 beneficiaries in earning livelihoods through conducting infrastructural development works in all unions under Pirgachha upazila.The development works include construction and renovation of rural roads, culverts, water bodies, ponds, canals, educational and religious institutions, cleaning of weeds, preparing compost heaps,
repairing and earth-filling etc.District Relief and Rehabilitation Officers Abdus Salam said the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has allocated Taka 28.80 crore for 36,008 beneficiaries in all eight upazilas of Rangpur under the government’s social safety network this time.Under the programme, each of the card-holder beneficiaries will work for five days in a week to earn a total of Taka 8,000 as wages per head for 40-day works during the two-month lean period till December 31 next, he added. -BSS, Rangpur
