Two new judges for Appellate Division

Dhaka, September 02 – Two justices of the High Court were appointed to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, the country’s apex court, on Wednesday. The newly appointed judges are Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Obaidul Hasan.
They are the first new appointments to the country’s apex court, after the controversial exit of then-Chief Justice S. K. Sinha and retirements of Justices Nazmun Ara Sultana and Wahhab Miah in 2017-18 had reduced the strength of the court to just 6 justices, from a peak of 9 in the last decade. Today’s announcement takes it back up to 8.
President Abdul Hamid gave the appointment as per the power conferred by Article 95 (1) of the Constitution, said a press release.
The appointment will come into effect on the date of taking the oath. – UNB
