Two suspected criminals killed in ‘Dhaka gunfight’

Two suspected criminals were killed in an alleged gunfight with Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in the city’s Khilkhet area on early Monday.

The detectives also arrested two associates of the two killed criminals and recovered a foreign made pistol, a magazine, two bullets, two sharp weapons and other goods from the spot.

Two members of the DB were also injured in the incident.The deceased were identified as Nannu and Mosharraf.

Deputy Commissioner (Gulshan division) of the DB Moshiur Rahman told UNB that several teams of DB (Gulshan Division) took position in Khilkhet area on early Monday from 11am on Sunday night as they had information that a gang of criminals boarding on a CNG-run auto-rickshaw were roaming Khilkhet area.

When the suspected criminals on an auto-rickshaw were heading towards Khilkhet Flyover from Shewra Bus stand at around 2:30am, a DB team gave signal to stop the three wheeler. When the auto-rickshaw was fleeing through the flyover defying the signal, another DB team put up check post at other side of the flyover at Kuril Bishaw Road, Moshiur said.

When the auto-rickshaw came down from the flyover, two of the criminals got out and started running away towards a water body while firing gunshots targeting the detectives. The DB police also returned fire that triggered a brief gunfight, he said.

After a moment, the detectives found two suspects were lying on the street. They were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with the help of Khelkhet thana police. On-duty doctor of the hospital declared them dead at around 5am.

The detectives also detained two people — auto-rickshaw driver Shafiqul Islam and Siddique from inside the auto-rickshaw and recovered a foreign made pistol, a magazine, two bullets, two sharp weapons and other goods from the spot.

During interrogation, the two arrestees identified the two deceased as Nannu and Mosharraf.

Nannu used to drive yellow cab. He had been languishing in jail for six years for killing a passenger, while Mosharraf was wanted in several cases, including murder. Shafique and Siddique were arrested earlier along with yaba pills and phensidyle, said the DC DB.

They also revealed that they were involved in small trader Harun killing. The body of Harun was found besides Australian International School near the 300 feet road.
