UAE firm begins producing ‘affordable’ generic medicines in Dubai

Pharmax Pharmaceuticals, a UAE-based pharmaceutical company, has begun production of “affordable generic medicines” in its manufacturing facility located in Dubai Science Park.
The Dhs125m custom-built factory has a current annual capacity of over 200 million tablet and capsule dosage forms, which will increase in the next three to five years to over 800 million, a statement said.
The facility received its Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) licence in March 2018 and provides branded generic medications, which are affordable equivalents to brand-name drugs and have the same intended use, effects and route of administration.

Pharmax will produce medications targeting chronic conditions common in the region including cardiovascular diseases, psychiatric and neurological disorders, gastroenterological diseases, metabolic disorders such as hyperlipidemia and diabetes, central nervous system diseases, bacterial and viral infectious diseases, respiratory illnesses, asthma and allergies, bone and joint inflammation disorders and urological diseases.
The company will prioritise supergenerics such as sustained release, modified release and orodispersible tablets, the statement added.
Construction of the facility began in September 2015 as a joint venture between UAE medicine distributor Al Ittihad Drug Store and two Moroccan pharmaceutical manufacturing companies – Cooper Pharma and Bottu Pharmaceuticals.
It is the first such facility to open in Dubai Science Park and is equipped with European technology that meet global regulatory standards.
