UP chairman held over cutting C’nawabganj youth’s wrists

Chapainawabganj, Sept 19 (UNB) – Police in a drive arrested two people, including a union parishad chairman, from Jhilimpur in Sadar upazila on Thursday night for their alleged involvement in severing the wrists of a young man over previous enmity.

One of the arrestees is Foyez Ahmed, 35, chairman of Ujirpur union parishad in Shibganj upazila, while the identity of the other could not be known yet.

Tipped off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area around 8 pm and arrested them, said Atiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Shibganj Police Station.

Earlier, on Wednesday, miscreants severed the wrists of Romel Hossain, 28, at Ujirpur in Shibganj upazila.

Abdus Salam, uncle of the victim and a local Awami League leader, said Romel and UP chairman Foyez had been at loggerheads for long over establishing supremacy in a ferry ghat of the area.

Family sources said when Romel along with his two friends was returning home several people waylaid him near Ujirpur Beribadh and asked him to meet Ujirpur UP chairman Foyez.

As he went to the chairman’s office his hired goons blindfolded him and severed his wrists of both hands and left him near Beribadh area, they alleged.

On information, family members rescued him and took him to Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital.

Two other people identified as Alauddin and Jahangir were arrested in this connection on Thursday.
