US urged to acknowledge genocide the Rohingyas faced

“On Thursday, the United States will co-host a virtual global donor conference for the Rohingya. If U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo wants to truly demonstrate U.S. leadership and galvanize international support for the Rohingya people, he must first acknowledge the truth of what they have experienced: genocide.

Earlier today, Refugees International and 33 other organizations sent a letter to Pompeo urging him to publicly acknowledge Myanmar’s crimes against the Rohingya people as genocide, says a statement from Refugees International Senior Advocate Daniel P. Sullivan
Legal and human rights experts, faith-based organizations, and bipartisan Members of Congress have joined Refugees International and its partners in urging the Secretary of State to finally make a genocide determination. Doing so would not only help galvanize support for the ongoing and immense humanitarian needs of the Rohingya people in Bangladesh and Myanmar, but it would also help prevent Myanmar from committing further atrocities,” the statement adds, according to a message received from Refugees International.
